Sandalwood has got to be one of my most favorite can’t do
without substances. Sandalwood is a fragrant
tree native to India, and other parts of Asia.
Asian sandalwood has been harvested to near extinction and other sources
such as Australian sandalwood have been used as replacements. The hard wood is the part of plant most often
used as beads, wood chips, ground powder, and essential oils are also extracted.
Sandalwood has many benefits and medicinal properties. It has so many uses which makes it one of my
favorites. Some of the properties of
sandalwood are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, sedative, anti-spasmodic,
emollient, and expectorant. It has been
used for treating bronchitis, sore throats, coughs, and fevers. It is very good used externally to treat
wounds, insect bites, or sores to prevent infection.
Sandalwood is wonderful when used as a beauty
treatment. It can easily be made into a
paste when combined with milk and rubbed on the skin to clear acne, tighten the
skin, and give a fresh, youthful glow to your appearance. It is an excellent
moisturizer and it can also be used on scars and spots to help them heal and
disappear faster. Sandalwood can be used
to relieve puffiness and inflammation and it is very soothing and cooling to
the skin. It is traditionally used by
Indian women before their wedding. And
if looking and feeling beautiful is not enough, sandalwood is also an
aphrodisiac.
While that’s all wonderful, in my opinion the most
beneficial and powerful aspect of sandalwood is its ability to dissolve
fear! While the volume of our language
to describe emotions is extensive, at the very core there is only love and
fear. When we vibrate at the frequency
of love we are happy and joyous, our bodies are healthy and healing and good
thinks are attracted our way. On the
other hand, when we slip into a vibration of fear we feel anxious, sad, angry
or nervous. These emotions can make us
physically ill and attract more painful experiences into our lives. Ideally we would all like to stay in a
constant state of love but unless you are a monk living in a constant
meditative state high up in a mountain cave it is pretty unrealistic in the
modern world we live in. We all
fluctuate between these two in normal life.
The key is to recognize these shifts and use the tools available to us
to immediately bring us back into the state where we want to be. Sandalwood is my go to tool for this. It eases anxiety and stress and cools the
brain. The aroma can instantly induce
calmness, peace, clarity and positive thinking.
