Angelica (angelica archangelica) is also known as archangel and masterwort, and it is from the parsley family. Angelica archangelica grows wild in Finland, Sweden, France, Greenland, and Iceland. There are about 30 varieties of Angelica, some of which grow in North America, but angelica archangelica is the only one officially known for medicinal purposes.  Angelica root is a bitter, spicy, and aromatic herb which is associated with the Sun, Fire, and masculine energy.

Angelica has long been known as a healing herb with the ability to cast illness from the body and protect it from harm. It is used to protect the body physically through resistance to disease and also psychically against attack. It is most often used as a tea which is quite easy make.  But one can also obtain benefits from burning, putting it in baths, carrying it and sprinkling it around. The root is probably best known for increasing blood strength. Angelica can increase the amount of red blood cells, and increases the blood’s ability to clot.   Angelica root could also be used to treat headaches, colds, coughs, fever, pleurisy, rheumatism, colic, and diseases of the urinary organs.  Angelica root is also an herb used to treat addictions such as alcoholism.  It is said to create disgust for alcoholic spirits which is interesting because it is also used as a flavoring in some spirits.

Be cautious when using angelica root because it may affect heart rate and blood pressure as well as increase the level of sugar in the blood.
